Closed store > Open office / Circulating matter

At Søvej 10 in Hvalsø, a former grocery store is being transformed into a shared workspace for a new community of independent professionals, start-ups and small businesses. Once defined by closed brick façades and artificial lighting, the building is opened up through carefully cut window openings, allowing daylight to once again enter deep into the interior.

The transformation is guided by circular principles. As new openings are cut into the façades, both bricks and underlying concrete elements are carefully salvaged and reintroduced as part of the building’s new interior—reassembled into tables, benches and shared furniture. Light panels from the former store are reused and gently filtered through layers of reclaimed textiles—surplus sheets harvested from De Forenede Danske Dampvaskerier—introducing warmth and tactility to the otherwise robust setting. In other rooms, the fixtures are inverted, allowing the light to wash across reflectors made from leftover ventilation ducts salvaged from the original building.

Together, these interventions balance the raw qualities of the existing structure with softer layers of wood, fabric and colour. Developed for Vanarheimr, the project seeks not only to transform a building, but to give something back to the town itself—creating an open, inviting presence between the commercial life of the town square and the nearby lake, and establishing Søvej 10 as a generous and active part of everyday life in Hvalsø.
