Attic > Home / Weaved with the old wood construction

Copenhagen is expanding. At the same time Copenhagen is aiming to halve our individual carbon footprint. But can we grow and reduce at the same time?

It is obvious that we must devote curious persistanse in redeeming all the potential areas the city already holds in the existing building mass. Areas where we can accommodate, without building from scratch. How many Copenhageners can live in the city’s unused lofts? The answer is 32.000 people.* Four of them will live here in Vesterbro, in what used to be an empty attic.

When this specific row of buildings was erected alongside the traintracks in 1890’s, the King requested for them to be designed with a tall roof pitch, unlike the typical Copenhagen roofs. The aim was, for ´the face of the city´ to look it’s most prominent, when visitors arrived by train. Therefore this family could expand their 4th floor apartment, with two extra stories weaved into the old roof construction.
