Ruin > Studio / Reestablished as found
When found, the old barn’s wood construction had partly collapsed, and the 1.2-meter-wide stone walls were sheltering a lush forest of trees and flowers. The situation as found, with tales and signs of animals and farming was carefully registered, and both materials and phenomena were considered reusable and valuable.
Atelier Kvalnes is partly an add-on, partly a restoration project that preserves the existing stone wall: The basement’s concrete benches reinforce the ruin and allowed for a lowering of the basement floor, while the added concrete ‘crown’ stabilizes the stacked stones and offers the new house an efficient and leveled starting point.
