Shipyard > City district / 'No demolish' transformation

As part of the thorough preparations for the structure plan competition (2025), Spolia Studio has provided analysis on a possible density of this development, based on archetypal features from renown Copenhagen neighborhoods – with full focus on preserving and transformning all existing buildings found on site.

It will be crucial that the curiosity, wealth of ideas and diversity that characterizes Refshaleøen today is maintained and further developed in new forms. For here lies one of the main keys to building a good and relevant district which continues to inspire new thinking. A district where, as today, you can see and feel the values and find room for celebration, poetry, reflection and tranquility.”

The topic of density is nuanced beyond the percentage figures, looking into how building mass variations, long and short views, light, water reflections, historical and industrial atmospheres, lushness and borrowed landscapes across the harbour space, all take part in the experience of sensed density.
